How I Became an NFL Player You may be wondering how it happened. I wonder about it all the time. ‘You’ll never make it they’d say. It’s not possible.’ Yet somehow, I ended on the Seahawks with the Nickname DK Metcalf. They named me Metcalf because of how huge my calves were. Everyone forgot my real name (Donavyn Berry) and made me someone who in all honesty I didn’t really want to be. Sure, I get all the catches from my ole pal Russel but what does that matter. Look I could go on and on about how it all is now, but you don’t want to hear that lets talk about how it started. The first game. The big game. What should have been an easy victory. Well it wasn’t. We played the Cardinals. It was a sunny day in the start of August, and we were playing at our home field. Russel Wilson went over his normal offensive pep- talk while Wagner talked to our defense trying to get them excited. Once they were done our head coach Pete Carol stood on the table and started to do our chant. “What are we going to do?” “WIN” “What are we going to do?” “WIN” “Then let’s do it” Our whole team started jumping and getting excited this was a big game and we were here to win. Me, Russel Wilson, Bobby Wagner, and Chris Carson all went out to talk to the players the cardinals sent and flip the coin. They sent out Kyler Murray and a few other no name players. We all shook each other’s hands and the ref flipped the coin. Bobby called out heads. We all watched as the coin landed on the ground on tails. The Cardinals called to get ball the start of second half. I sat on the bench and watched as our special teams along with my old pal Tyler Lockett went out to receive the ball. Lockett got on the 15-yard line and started jumping in anticipation. The Cardinals kicked the ball and as Lockett caught it at the 20-yard line. He started to run a hand from one of the defenders brushed along his abs and he side stepped but before could keep going another defender knocked him back and he stumbled to the ground. Our offense got out on the field as Russel called the play in the huddle. He wanted us to start the game out big and he told us were going to go for a straight shotgun and that I was to go straight forward, and he would try to get the ball to me. We got in formation and Russel got in his spot he pointed to the line and told them something. Then he said, “Blue 33 Blue 33 yellow weasel I’m the quarterback Hut!” We all started to run in our formations, and I ran straight forward as fast as I could I knocked the Cardinals cornerback out of my way then ran straight forward. Then I turned around and saw Russel Wilson threw the ball at me I jumped up to catch it but it flew over my head I shook my head realizing that yes it wasn’t my fault and yeah I had no chance of ever catching that ball but what did it matter I had just made an embarrassment of myself. Then as I turned around to go back to the line, I saw one of the Cardinals guys running with the ball. I couldn’t believe it he had picked the ball from me. I tried to run at him as fast as I could finally, I reached him and tackled him but not before he had reached the end zone. By the end of the half the cardinals were leading 14- 3. One of the touchdowns had been a td run by Kyler Murray and the other one was an interception that had been my fault. Our team couldn’t believe it we should be beating this team but instead we were getting our butts kicked. Our coaches started to give us speeches other players tried to get me excited, but it wasn’t happening. We were never going to win this game and it was all my fault. When we got back from the locker room our coach gave me some pretty surprising news, he was going to put me on the kickoff team. I didn’t understand why, and it didn’t make any sense but I’m sure he had some reason. When our kickoff team got out we waited for the kicker to kick the ball and as soon as he did we all started to run down the field I ran straight for the person supposed to get the ball and as he got it I hit him as I hit him I knocked the ball loose from his hands then before one of his teammates could get it I ran off the guy and grabbed the ball and as quickly as I could ran into the end zone. All of a sudden, I felt great I had gotten a touchdown that made the game closer than what it once was. It was 14-10. The coach knew exactly what he was doing. At the 2-minute warning it was 21- 17 the defense out on the field. We were all still in the dump even after I had scored the touchdown it didn’t look like we stood much of a chance. Chris Carson had scored our other touchdown and now we had to pray a miracle happened. And it did happen. Right at the 1 minute 48 second mark Richard Sherman intercepted the ball and while he didn’t get all that many yards, we were still going places. We were on our 38-yard line. We couldn’t get anywhere and there was only 4 seconds left in the game right now we were at our 49-yard line it was 3rd and 9. Wilson called the play the same play we had done earlier in the game that had caused the interception. I looked at the cornerback for the other team and an idea came into my head. Wilson went over his usual rundown of words and finally said “Hut!” I started to run and let the corner stay on me finally I shoved him off me and watched as Wilson threw the ball at me. I quickly jumped up and came down with the ball but not before I got hit by the corner. I fumbled the ball and couldn’t believe what had just happened. Then I stood up and saw that I was standing in our end zone it didn’t matter that I had fumbled the ball I had just scored a touchdown. We had won the game 23- 21. We won. We were going to be a great team this season I could feel it.
